I couldn’t stop a teardrop from falling from my eyes.
His face crumpled, and he enveloped me in his arms as we sobbed into one another.
“I know what you’re doing. I’m not stupid,” he scolded me, his voice thick with tears. “You’re leaving me.”
“Oh, Dmitri, I am so sorry but I have to do this,” I said to him, tightening my hold on him. “I want you safe. I — I love you so much! I don’t want to see you get hurt because of me.”
“Idiot! You are already hurting me,” he said, trying to say it in a teasing manner but failing miserably. “I love you too, Anima. I have loved you all my life,” he confessed then rained kisses all over my face.
Gently, I cupped his face between my hands and kissed him softly on his lips. The kiss tasted salty from our tears, yet bittersweet with the emotion we both poured into it. My first kiss… and my last… from my beloved Dmitri. I felt my heart bleed when I ended it. I gently wiped away the tears from his cheeks.
“Take care, my love,” I whispered to him. “Be safe. I will come back for you.”
He turned his face to kiss my palm. His eyes begged at me. “You promise?”
I knew if I’d had a soul of my own I would have pledged it to him at that moment of time. “I promise,” I said to him in earnest. “Now go. Felicia and Claude will keep you safe.” Holding onto his hand, I gently pushed him towards the portal. I watched as with tears falling down his face he mouthed ”I love you”’ one last time and ghosted through. Then finally, I felt him let go when he crossed over.
