He was my protector. My savior. He would have done anything for me.

Now he's a criminal, and he's taken everything.

He's my stepbrother and I hate him.

I'm homeless, jobless, desperate. And I had to come crawling back. To him.

Bad enough my college money went to post his bail, now I have to work in the same, seedy bar he deals out of, too, just to get by? And listen to him with girl after girl, night after night, while he walks around all shirtless and sexy during the day?

I'm going crazy--wanting him. I know I shouldn't.

Maybe he was once my Prince Charming, but now he's just a big, tattooed, pierced, cocky prick.

Problem is, even though he cut contact with me two years ago, I couldn't turn off the feeling I had for him. He's back, and my feelings are back too.

Now he's in trouble, with his gang, with the law.

And me... I'm in trouble, too.

“No, no, no,” Jack cut in. “You need to get her engine fired up. Make her panties wet. You have to be forceful, take control. They eat up that shit.”

Martin shook his head. “No. I’m telling you, there are only two ways to get a girl in your bed at a place like this. Shakespeare or poetry.”

“Shakespeare?” I asked. “Don’t you think that’s a little cheesy?”

“Not at all,” Martin replied. “Just walk up to her and say ‘but soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun!’”

“And then add,” Jack insisted, “the sun isn’t the only thing around here that rises.” He wiggled his eyebrows.

Why was I even considering listening to them? It seemed that the guy who was about to become a priest had the best advice.

“Shakespeare? Really?” I wasn’t comfortable with it, but with the alcohol and one glance at the blonde that had just walked in, I felt my inhibitions fade away. Maybe the guys knew more about this kind of thing than me. Although judging from their track record in school, I had my doubts. I didn’t remember the last time any of them had a girlfriend.

Fuck it.

Why not? You only live once. Why shouldn’t I have tried to take advantage of the situation? Jack was right, as painful as it was for me to admit. By my calculations, ninety-three percent of the women at the bar were there for the convention. My chances of scoring one who knew something about Shakes were pretty good.

I slammed back the rest of my drink and pulled a wad of courage from my left nut.

I can do this.

None of the guys looked convinced. Duncan gave a lopsided smile, Martin shoved his earbud back in his ear, and Jack sat cross-legged, calmly folding his hands in his lap. I really hoped they wouldn’t watch me; it was going to be hard enough as it was, let alone while I had an audience.

I drew two deep breaths and stood. The blonde at the bar sat alone, sipping her drink, and I took several confident strides toward her as I tried to piece together what I was going to say.

“Hi,” I whispered.

But the music was too loud, and she couldn’t hear me.

So I tried again.

“Hi,” I shouted, causing her to flinch and dribble some of her drink down her chin.

Smooth, asshole.

“It’s loud in here!” I said, without as much force that time.

She smiled and tucked her hair behind her ear. I shoved my hands in my pockets and tried to remember the line I was supposed to use.

But it wasn’t coming. We remained smiling at each other until the moment became strange.

Then uncomfortable.

And then it verged on painful.

What was I going to say? Did we decide I was going to introduce myself? Or was it poetry?

Shakespeare!

“But soft, what…light through yonder window breaks,” I began, trying not to stutter.

Her eyes widened, and I knew I had her attention, but as my palms grew clammy and my chest hollowed, I realized that the Juliet line wouldn’t work.

Unless her name was Juliet. Which was unlikely.

It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. That’s not going to work! Dammit! I need something else! It’s too late! I have to finish the damn quote!

I swallowed, and spat out the first thing my mind could make sense of.

“My dick rises in the east.”

“She’s been missing him a lot lately.”

Julia’s voice is barely a whisper and my chest constricts. Our conversations don’t normally make it to discussing Gage unless we’re already arguing. The fact that she just brought it up shocks me and I’m not comfortable with it. I don’t know how to take it. I feel my jaw pulse with frustration and scramble to change the subject again. “Why is it so chilly in here?”

Her smile disappears and she tugs her sweatshirt nervously. “I didn’t know it was.”

“How can you possibly not know?” I start to the thermostat across the room when she clears her throat.

“The heater isn’t working right. I asked Lane to come by and look at it earlier this week.”

“And he hasn’t been here yet?” I shoot her a look and she shakes her head. “He’ll be here tonight.” I dig my cell outta my pocket.

“Crew, don’t. Please. The last time you called my landlord he was a complete jerk to me for a couple of months. I just got on good terms with him again.”

I scroll through my contacts list, looking for his name.

“Crew ...” I know her doe-eyes are pleading with me. I also know if I look up at her, I’ll be somewhat inclined to give in. So I don’t.

Time to man up.
The creak of the stairs echoed his uneasiness as he climbed to the second floor. As open as the first, it would easily transform into a secondary dining room or banquet area. At the moment, however, it was serving as storage. He could hear Peyton rummaging through something around the corner from a huge cabinet that blocked his view. Stealing himself against the chaos racing through his brain, he stepped into the room.
And stood there, dumbfounded all over again, barely resisting the urge to glare down at his crotch with a what the fuck are you thinking? It seemed nothing had changed—if he was in Peyton’s presence, he was hard and hurting; that’s all there was to it.
“You look just the way I remember you,” he finally said.
Peyton muttered something that sounded like “At least you remember,” but he couldn’t be sure. When the silence threatened to crack his teeth, he was gritting them so hard, he tried again. “Looks like the place needs work. When you planning to open?”
Stiff spine, no more muttering, but the box she was kneeling beside was getting a cavity search like nobody’s business. Gabe switched to his don’t-fuck-with-me cop tone. “What are you doing here, Peyton?”
Peyton didn’t even flinch. This was definitely not the girl he’d known in Memphis. “That much should be obvious,” she said. Metal clinked a sharp accompaniment to her words.
“In Claywater?” He stepped forward carefully, fighting the instinct to pick her up and shake her. She always had ripped his control to tiny fucking shreds. “Why here? Why now? You’re a long way from Memphis, baby.”
Now that got a reaction. Peyton shot up and around, her expression and her tone both dripping venom. “Don’t you ever call me that again.” She sucked in a deep breath, and he could almost hear the rattle of emotion in her chest. What was it? Anger, certainly, but then what—pain, like him? Disgust? At him or herself? Because unless he missed his guess, there was hunger in the mix, a hunger that matched his own.
“I don’t have to explain anything to you, Gabe. You lost that right a long time ago, if you ever had it to begin with, so don’t bother questioning me. I have as much right to be here as anyone else.”
“Stalking me, baby?” This time he used the word deliberately. The need in his gut felt like a bomb just waiting for the fuse to burn down. He had to find out why she was here and then get out before it was too late.
The raspberry Peyton blew filled the air between them with her scorn. “Sure, I’m following you. Right. Like I knew where you lived after you walked out on me without so much as a good-bye note.” Her body tightened, her face going blank of all emotion, all reaction, and her control—such a sharp contrast to the way he felt right now—shook him to the core. She jerked her head in a terse negative. “No, Gabe. This is my place. It’s time for you to leave.” A tiny smile curled the corner of her mouth. “Again.”
Too late had been reached. His body responded to her challenge without thought, without restraint. He stalked her, silent and deadly, his muscles readying for battle—and looking forward to every minute of it, if his erection was any indication. Each step had Peyton backing away in equal measure, although she didn’t give him the satisfaction of fear. Or words. Only the movement of her body spoke.

Writing has been my passion since childhood, but like many writers, life got in the way. After earning a BA in English Literature, I married and started a family. But the worlds and characters that swirled through my mind just wouldn’t go away, and at a particularly difficult time in my life, I picked up pen and paper (or laptop) and tried to release some of that difficulty onto the page. I’ve been writing ever since. Now I’m a member of Romance Writers of America, run an accountability blog to help writers reach their goals, and am pursuing publication with the same passion I feel for writing.

Nothing pleases me more than sharing the stories of my heart with you, the reader, and I hope, in some small way, these stories will touch your heart too.
