Specimen by Shay Savage Excerpt Reveal

SPECIMEN EXCERPT REVEAL.jpg

Excerpt
Suddenly, my body goes rigid.  I can’t move at all, but I can feel a surge through my entire system.  I can see it, taste it, smell it.  My heart forces blood through my veins, warming my insides.  As the blood flows, the muscles in my legs, arms, and chest flex.
“Sten?  Are you all right?”
I try to focus on her face, but my vision is blurred.
“Hold on, Sten.  You just need to ride it out.”
“What…”  I can’t utter another word.  My throat seizes up, and for a second, I am unable to take a breath.
Riley’s palm touches my face as she presses a sensor to my temple.  My arm jerks, and I grasp her hand.  I press it to my chest.
“Relax.  Focus on your breath.”
“I can’t!”
She takes my free hand in hers and holds it to her body, right over her heart.
“Focus on me, then,” she says.  “Feel my heartbeat.”
My fingers twitch.  I can feel the steady beat in each fingertip.  Closing my eyes, I count the beats.  One hundred.  Two hundred.  Three hundred.
Minutes pass.  I keep counting.  Eventually, my body begins to adjust and my muscles relax.  I become aware of not just her heartbeat, but of how close my hand is to her breast.  My dick strains in my shorts.
I reach out with my legs, wrapping them around her waist and bringing her body toward my crotch.  Releasing her hand, I reach up and grab the back of her head and use the other hand to push the collar of the lab coat out of the way.  The blue of her blouse contrasts with her skin.  It’s beautiful, enticing.
With one finger, I trace the edge of her collar, brushing over her skin.  I can feel her heart beat under my fingertip, and I want to taste the spot where I’ve touched her.  I look back to her eyes.  She’s staring at my lips.
I bring us together, pressing my mouth to hers gently at first but then with more vigor.  I can taste mint on her breath as my tongue slides over hers.  I thread my fingers through her hair and tighten my thighs around her waist, holding her close to me.  I trail my finger farther down her collar and spread my hand to cup her breast.
She pulls back, breaking the kiss.
“Sten, you’ll have to stop that now.”
“I don’t want to.”
“I know.”  She touches the side of my face, running her hand over my rough cheek.
“I want you.  I need you.”  I don’t understand why I’m explaining myself.  It’s clear to me from her scent that she wants this too, but she keeps pushing me away.  She denies me as she denies herself.
Why?

I awaken in a laboratory.
I don’t know who I am.
I’m inexplicably drawn to the doctor who cares for me.  She tells me I’ve been altered, that I’m stronger and faster, that I’ll be a key component in a war between corporations.  She says I volunteered for this.  She says I volunteered to be transformed, but I have no way of knowing if what she says is true.
Something isn’t right.  My memories have been taken, wiped clean, but dreams begin to slip into my conscious mind.  I can’t let anyone know when that happens, or they’ll remove my memories again.  Somewhere inside of me, I know I need to remember something important.
I’m fighting a war I don’t understand, and the one woman I rely on can’t be trusted.

Synopsis
A hero worshipped…
Brooke Valen has resigned herself to a life of adoring Samsyn Cimarron from afar. The massive warrior has been her knight in shining armor since the night she and her family arrived on the island of Arcadia, forced to take new identities and blend into the strange new land to avoid a terrorist’s bounty on her father’s head. Though Brooke has grown into a woman and devoted herself to learning battle tactics in order to earn Syn’s respect, it is clear he’ll see her as nothing more than the scrawny teen who washed up on his shore six years ago.
A prince scarred…
Samsyn Cimarron has all but taken a sacred oath never to marry. Disillusioned by the sham of his parents’ union, fairytale love is nothing but a concept for dreamers and story books. Instead, Syn has devoted himself to things he can control, like his country’s security—and a long string of one-night lovers. But when Brooke Valen serves on his temporary security detail and almost dies in the doing, all his careful mandates are shattered—and one night of naked passion with her doesn’t feel like enough. But it has to be. His desires are dark and wicked, unworthy of a beauty like Brooke.
A fate sealed…
When Arcadia’s security hinges on Samsyn taking a bride, he reluctantly seals the deal with Brooke—but vows that even his ring on her finger won’t make him take her body again.
A love realized?
Though married to the man of her dreams, Brooke has never felt more alone in her life. Is the flame of their love strong enough to shatter Samsyn’s darkness? Can the beauty of her soul reach to the beast in his? Or will she have to prove her love by confronting the assassin who’s been sent to finish off her family for good?

“Dammit, Valen. Stop fighting like a girl.”

I let my heavily taped hands frame my glower. I was on fire and ready to go again. A challenging smirk answered back. It had a face attached to it, of course, but right now, I focused only on that grin—and how pissed I was at it.Because it was the truth.

I was a girl.

And God, was I sparring with the pathetic ability of one.

Which always happened when I knew Samsyn Cimarron was on his way up Tahreuse Mountain.

Syn.

There he was again, bursting to life in my mind—as he’d done nearly once an hour for the last six years. Prince Samsyn Obsydian Cimarron, second in line to the throne of Arcadia Island, commander of its entire military force, notable collector of any vehicle that could speed him across the kingdom in faster time—but to me, he was simply my noble Syn. The first person who’d uttered a kind word to me here. The source of my first Arcadian smile. My protecting knight, damn near ordering me to feel safe again, filling out every dashing, gorgeous potential of the twenty-first birthday he’d just celebrated—

And in the doing, making me fall instantly in love with him.

That had been almost six years ago today.

I really didn’t like letting go of shit.

Especially Syn Cimarron.

I gulped as the image of him intensified. Dark hair on the wind, blown across his huge shoulders. Powerful legs, always eating up the ground with his strides. Arms swinging at his sides, bulging…everywhere. Effortless grace. Complete power. Practically bending the air around him to his will, as if he’d arrived here through some strange time portal and was only putting up with the 21st century for the cool man toys. His mighty body would be just as comfortable in thick chain mail, a massive sword hanging from his belt…

My ruminations always had the shittiest timing.

Jagger spotted the distraction in my eyes and swept in, scooping his right foot behind my left ankle. I was instantly sent ass-over-elbows, landing flat on my back. The bright Arcadian sun glared into my eyes. The fresh Spring grass ate into my back.

“Oof!” I pushed up, ready to pop back to my feet. “Motherf—” And again hit the barrier of his boot, planted to my sternum.

Jag arched his russet brows. No added smirk this time. Wise move. “Well. You have not forgotten how to swear like a man.”

“Bonsun! Let me up.”

“Impressive. Profanity in two languages today.”

“Let me up, Jag.”

“Not until I have your promise of twenty minutes without thoughts of him.”

Ass. Sometimes he could read me as well as Dillon, which was a little scary. Really, I didn’t need any more guys in my life with the psychic-force connection thing going on. At least Dillon had an excuse. My stepbrother had always been more like a twin, especially with his similar coloring and temperament. I had no choice about his hooks into my brain.

What about Samsyn?

Samsyn…was different.

Beyond different.

He was the dream. The Pegasus. The dragon on the mountain. The man who’d never be connected to me like that, in spite of my constant pleas to fate for the miracle.

Impossible.

AboutTheAuthor
Hi there. I'm Angel: book lover, writing addict, hopeless romantic, pop culture geek and avid shoe lover.
A bit about me...
I've been hooked on books since I was a kid but it got worse in my twenties, when I discovered romances--the hotter, the better. Growing up in Southern California, with lots of surfer manliness surrounded me, was certainly a good boost for reading about delicious alpha guys and the women who adore them. When I learned I had a knack for telling these stories too, I guess you could say I was doomed--though my path toward romance novelist took a few detours via a concert-reviewing gig for my college newspaper (free show tickets...backstage passes...that was a no-brainer), artist interviews for a Beverly Hills dance music mag, personal assistant work for a record producer, dance club disc jockey, and a lot of fun in the hospitality industry.
These days, I still live in California, and have found an amazing alpha guy of my own who was brave enough to marry me. We live on a street that looks like Brigadoon, with our beautiful daughter. I have the best life ever, and never forget to thank the Big Guy Upstairs for it, either.

As Ann grew older, and her hormones kicked in, she discovered bodice ripping Fabio-esque romance novels. Never a big fan of purple prose, throbbing spears of fleshy pleasure and wet honey pots make her giggle, she sought out books that gave the sex scenes in the story just as much detail and plot as everything else-without using cringe worthy euphemisms. This led her to the wonderful world of Erotic Romance, and she's never looked back.
Now Ann spends her days trying to tune out cartoons playing in the background to get into her 'sexy space' and has accepted that her Muse has a severe case of ADD.

To The Stars - Tour Teaser 1

About TO THE STARS:

In the second standalone book in New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Molly McAdams’ Thatch series, Knox Alexander must convince his long-time love Harlow Evans that they’re meant to be together.

He promised to wait for her.
She told him he was wasting his time.
Not waiting for him ended up being the biggest mistake of her life.

When they were younger, Knox Alexander swore to Harlow Evans that he would wait for her to turn eighteen so they could be together. But that was two and a half years away, and Harlow couldn’t ask him to give up all the fun and thrills of going away to college for her. As the years passed, Knox remained a constant in her life but when her eighteenth birthday came around, Harlow’s heart belonged to someone else.

Every day for the last four years, Harlow has been haunted by that fateful choice. And though he may appear unaffected by what happened in their past, Knox has always tried to fill the void Harlow left. But when he comes stumbling back into her life and refuses to leave, will Harlow finally let him into her heart…?

To The Stars - Tour Teaser 2

EXCERPT

“Happy birthday, Low. I waited for you.”
The instant his voice filtered through the phone, my body stilled and warmed at the same time. My breath came out in a soft, audible huff, and my eyes shut as hundreds of welcome memories flooded my mind.
I didn’t have to look at the screen to know who was calling. I would know that voice anywhere, and I should have been expecting his call. Not just his call. This call. We’d been preparing for and talking about this call for two and a half years now.
My lips and fingers trembled, and I almost dropped the phone as I tried to make my throat work.
“I waited for you”, played over and over again like a broken record. A broken record with the most beautiful music still coming from it.
Turning my head just enough to look over my shoulder, I eyed the guy shrugging into his shirt, and my chest ached when I faced forward again.
No longer seeing the dorm room I was standing in, I let our memories consume me. “I—” I took in a shaky breath, and my voice came out as a strained whisper. “I didn’t wait for you.”

There was nothing. No sound, no response—only the most heartbreaking silence I’ve ever endured.

REVIEW

I had to take a day or 3 to process this book and what it did to me before I was able to sit down and pen a review for what I read. Such unbelievable pain and sorrow mixed with such a timeless love story, it was the perfect combination of triumph and tragedy.

Low and Knox met when she was too young for the two of them to be together as a couple but he told her he loved her to the stars and that he'd wait for her to turn 18 so they could finally be together and she told him he was wasting is time. It was their "thing" to say this to each other and became one of my favorite parts of their story, although no one else in the two characters' lives understood it or found it particularly romantic.

Low and Knox faced many challenges from the day they met trying to be together, from her age, their friends and family, time, miles and then another man. Just when Knox thinks Low's 18th birthday is upon them to finally put them together forever, one phrase from Low on the phone ruins it all for the two of them. It completely shattered my heart to know what they's spent years working toward and what we wanted so much to believe was inevitable has changed with one call. I held a little resentment toward Low for it but at the same time, had to keep reading with the hopes that it would change.

Enter Low's husband and monster, the man that was the reason Low and Knox did not end up together when she turned 18. Low's monster. From the very start we know he is not a character we will come to love, root for or want to see end up with Low in the end. He mentally and physically abuses her almost from the start and by the time she has been with him just four years, he has broken the woman we first met, the woman that Knox loved.

This book had some major twist and turns and was an emotional roller coaster that I thought would wreck a few times but I had to know how it ended, if Harlow's monster got what he deserved and if Low and Knox got the ending they so needed after all the years they fought and remained in each other's hearts.

I loved this book, the good, the bad and the super horrible parts. It was a page turner for sure and not one you will want to walk away from once you start. Five stars from me for Eye Candy Bookstore. ~ Kellie

And don’t miss the first book in the Thatch Series…

About Molly McAdams:

Molly grew up in California but now lives in the oh-so-amazing state of Texas with her husband, daughter, and fur babies. When she's not diving into the world of her characters, some of her hobbies include hiking, snowboarding, traveling, and long walks on the beach … which roughly translates to being a homebody with her hubby and dishing out movie quotes. She has a weakness for crude-humored movies and fried pickles, and loves curling up in a fluffy comforter during a thunderstorm ... or under one in a bathtub if there are tornados. That way she can pretend they aren't really happening.
