I took the envelope from her, my brows furrowed in confusion. I flipped it over and gasped, my name scrawled over the front of the thick envelope in Eli’s unmistakable handwriting. I stared at it for the longest time before looking down at Katherine. I wasn’t sure I should open it in front of her or not. I had no idea what I would find when I did.

“I don’t know what this is, Katherine. Believe me. I have no clue,” I said softly, shaking my head.

She nodded softly as she stood. She started to speak but then stopped, turning back to return to her bedroom to get ready to go. I flipped the envelope over in my hands, running my calloused finger over the handwriting.

“What the hell, Eli?” I whispered. “How in the hell?”

I slid my index finger beneath the flap of the large envelope, opening it. With shaking fingers I pulled the contents of the envelope free. Two additional envelopes appeared, along with a thick stick of folded papers. I turned the envelopes over, running my fingers over the lettering of Eli’s heavy handwriting.

One addressed to “My only child” and the other to “My beloved Katherine”. I started to call out to her but something made me hold back. Instead I unfolded the stack of papers, assuming it was a letter to me.

My suspicions were confirmed when I saw “William” scrawled across the top of the paper in Eli’s signature style. I looked up to see if Katherine was on her way back into the room. I only heard sounds coming from her bedroom so I tucked the other two envelopes in my suit jacket pocket and leaned back in the chair. I ran my hand through my hair, taking a deep breath before working my way through the letter.

August was winding down. School had started and I was spending some time with Will and Jax before my night class.

Well, that had been the plan.

Jax ended up leaving early to go hang out with his girlfriend, which left me alone with Will, something I avoided at all costs. I couldn’t fight my feelings if I were alone with him. He had offered to leave with Jax, but it wasn’t his fault that I couldn’t control my feelings, so instead, I sat by the pool while Will swam laps. I loved watching the way his muscles flexed under his skin. I could watch him move all day.

I felt like I was baking in the sun, so I moved to the side of the pool, dangling my feet in the water. I didn’t want to disturb Will, so I bent over and cupped some water in my hand, then rubbed it over my skin to cool off. Pouring some water over my neck and back, I closed my eyes and enjoyed the cool water against my hot skin. When my eyes opened, Will was standing in the middle of the pool, staring at me. His eyes were heated as he watched the water drip down my skin. I bit my lip, not wanting to break his trance. I liked the way his eyes felt on me. I liked that I didn’t have to pretend that I didn’t want him.

“Hot?” he asked. His voice was huskier, sexier.

“Yeah, a little.” He swam over to the side of the pool and put his hands on my thighs. My breath caught in my throat.

His eyes never left mine as he rubbed his thumbs over my skin. “I could help you cool off.”

“Oh, yeah?” I asked breathlessly. I didn’t recognize my own voice.

His hands moved further up my thighs until they were on my hips. He moved me closer to him until he was standing between my parted thighs. “Yeah.”

Our eyes never left each other. Chills raced over my skin even though the sun was intense, but when his hands moved behind me, I realized what he was trying to do.
“No, no, no!” I squealed, attempting to get out of his grip. He overpowered me and threw me in the pool. I resurfaced, spitting and wiping water from my eyes. Will smirked as I tried to swim away, but he caught me and pulled me closer, tucking a strand of hair over my shoulder. My entire body was pressed up against his. I could feel his breath skating over my skin … his heart pounding … his muscles moving…

It took my breath away.

He brushed more hair out of my face and ran a finger down my cheek. “Are you cooled off?” I nodded and leaned closer to him, wanting to curl up in his arms and never leave. “Good.”

His eyes studied my lips as they parted. I wondered if he would kiss me. I wanted him to. God, I wanted him to kiss me so badly it had become a physical ache. His arms tightened around me and I found it harder to breathe. I was dizzy with the closeness of Will and how incredible it felt to be in his arms. I had never felt this way before.

I didn’t want it to end.

The sliding glass door opened, pulling Will and me out of our trance. Jax and his girlfriend Lindsey stood on the deck. Lindsey was smirking, but Jax had his arms crossed over his chest and his eyebrow raised, a slight scowl on his lips. Will dropped his arms and moved away. I missed him immediately. I wanted to move closer to him and tell Jax to leave, but I couldn’t.

I had to be strong.

Excerpt
Seven hundred and seventy one long days.
Seven hundred and seventy one lonely nights.
Seven hundred and seventy one sunrises to remind me of the one that changed everything.
A little after five o' clock, I awake from yet another night of restless sleep; no longer needing an alarm, my body now a well-trained machine. Shuffling my feet to the compact kitchen in my apartment, I throw frozen bananas, strawberries, and pineapple into the blender with some orange juice and a scoop of yogurt and flip the switch to 'high.' Thirty seconds later, my frothy fruit shake is ready, the healthy alternative to what used to be a couple cups of black coffee. My stomach thanks me daily.
I grab my glass and stroll through the living room to the patio area - my morning sanctuary. Settling in my chair, I take a few minutes to drink in the view. The beach is still empty, as are the neighboring patios, and only the sound of waves crashing against the shore can be heard. The sliver of a moon still hangs high in the sky, but very soon, it's faint light will be overpowered and concealed by the intense brightness of the sun.
As if she heard my thoughts, the fiery temptress lifts her head up over the horizon, a burst of bright colors shooting up announces her arrival. I slowly sip my refreshing breakfast, my stare glued to the impressive vista, as the memories come rolling in with the surf. Every day, without fail, I torture myself for these few minutes, allowing my mind to reminisce about the time I spent with Trystan - the time when I realized I wanted more from life than the one I was living. I wanted to love and to be loved, unconditionally; I wanted someone - the same someone - to wake up to every morning and to go to bed with each night; and I wanted a family to protect, support, and experience life with.
But then I came home and remembered all the reasons why I couldn't have those things. I am a murderer. I killed a man in cold blood. And though my intentions for the act were honorable - at least in my mind - my life in exile is my punishment, void of any of the things she made me realize I truly want.
Going back for her has never been an option. I can't live in the States, and I can't ask someone I knew for two days to move to the other side of the world, especially now that she has a child. I'd give damn near anything for a chance to make it work, but with both of our situations, it just isn't feasible, even though I still try to help from afar.
I'm left with the visions of long blonde hair whipping in the breeze, the faint scent of coconut and lime swirling in my nose, the branding of bright emerald eyes onto my soul, and... sunrises. Inevitably, the dawn breaks each and every day, and inescapably, so does my heart.

The last of my drink slides down the back of my throat and I stand up, ready to face yet another day. Alone. Counting the hours until the next sunrise.
Seven hundred and seventy two.
