Deciding to get some fresh air, I headed toward the path along the ocean. The pain in my head had subsided and the ocean gave me an escape from the craziness I was going through. I wasn’t sure if it was the hypnotic motion of the waves or the calming sound they made crashing against the rocks. Maybe it was something else, but the ocean had a way of clearing my head. I couldn’t help but notice a beautiful woman with long, golden hair sitting on the rocks, gazing into the horizon. On a rock next to her sat an urn. My heart sank in my chest. She was so young and I wondered who she’d lost. Suddenly, I didn’t feel so bad about my own life. Someone she loved was gone forever and she was here alone to say goodbye. Her trembling lip told me how sad and broken she must feel. I couldn’t imagine doing something like this alone. Didn’t she have any family? Or friends? The need to hear what she was saying drew me to her, so I edged closer, but she didn’t see me in her peripheral vision. At least she didn’t look over in my direction. Why would she? She was lost in her own thoughts…grief. Tears streamed down her angelic face. I wanted to wipe them away and comfort her, but I kept myself at bay. “How do I say goodbye to you, Dane? You’re the only one who has loved me, taken care of me, protected me. When you died, part of me died too. Part of my soul went with you and I don’t know if I’ll ever get it back. I love you so much and I always will.” Her words were gut-wrenching and I assumed she was talking about a man she had been in love with. I wanted a woman to love me like that. I thought I had found it with Angelina, but she’d never seemed as sincere as this woman before me. An overwhelming force took over and my heart began racing. I wanted to sit next to her, wrap my arms around her, and tell her everything was going to be okay. She wasn’t alone. Her shoulders slightly shook as more tears raced down her cheeks. She continued pouring her heart out. “This just isn’t fair. You were too young to die. We had so much life to live together. So many things to do. Some days, I don’t know how I live without you. It wasn’t supposed to be this way.” Then she bowed her head. I found myself bowing so I could pray silently for her. “Dear Heavenly Father. Thank you so much for the gift of my husband Dane. You brought him into my life at just the right moment and used him to bless me more than I ever thought possible. I’m grateful that You love me so much to have given me such an amazing man. I commit Dane to You, knowing he is with You in Heaven. Please help me to move on in my life and have a life that You deem worthy. I love you, Lord, and want to honor You all the days of my life. Amen.” Listening to her words made me choke up. I’d gone to church with my family when I was a kid. But now I basically went at Christmas and Easter for my mom. Her prayer was so heartfelt, so honest. Was this beauty for real? Not only did she look like an angel, she had a genuine heart filled with love. She was a rare find. Other than my mom and sisters, I couldn’t remember ever knowing someone like her, a woman with such great faith. She stood up with the urn in her trembling hands, removed the cover, moved to the edge of the rocks, and began tossing her husband’s ashes into the ocean. The wind had picked up and I could see her struggling with the metal container. Her next movement was about to become her undoing as her foot slipped and I began watching in slow motion as her body was falling. Reacting quickly, I rushed to her, grabbing her hand, causing the urn to fall into the ocean. Instantly, she was in my arms, as I pulled her into my body to help ground her feet. Her crystal blue eyes met mine and we just took each other in for a moment. I couldn’t break away from the gaze of her eyes and I wanted nothing more than to crush my mouth to hers, kissing her like she deserved. A long, slow, wet kiss that would make her melt into me. Her juicy lips were beckoning me to them. Knowing that acting on impulse would probably get me slapped, I opted to use my mouth for talking instead. “Are you okay?” “I think so. How did you catch me? I thought I was falling in for sure.” “I was nearby and saw you lose your footing. I guess I have fast reflexes.” She looked around at the rocks below and the ocean lapping at them. “It’s gone,” she said, her voice cracking. “I’m sorry,” I said. “I couldn’t grab both you and the urn.” Looking back up at me she said, “Maybe it’s all for the best. Obviously, I wasn’t meant to keep it.” I could see the sadness well up in her baby blues. I tucked some strands of hair behind her ear. “You’re really brave. Letting go is very hard to do.” She smiled slightly and tilted her head. Searching my eyes, she just kept staring at me. Lost. She was lost and I wanted to save her. “Thank you for catching me,” she said, her eyes still piercing mine. I couldn’t stop looking at her beautiful face. “I’m just glad I got to you in time. The water is looking pretty rough right now.” My arms were still around her and then it dawned on me that her arms were around my body too. Keeping her in my arms was all I wanted to do. This felt right…natural. How was this possible? “Looks like you saved me. How am I ever going to repay you?” “Have dinner with me tonight and we’ll consider it payment in full.” She looked down for a brief moment, clearly contemplating my invitation. Maybe I was being too forward, but I didn’t care. How else was I going to see her again? “Okay,” she said hesitantly. “My name is Lindy Bernard, by the way.” “I’m Trace. Trace Michaels. I’ll make reservations for us at The Sea House.” “Sounds perfect. How about seven?” “Seven works.” “Okay, well, I’ll see you then. Thanks again for catching me,” she said letting go of my arms. Feeling the heat of her body leaving mine, I instantly wanted her close to me again. Sadly, I had to let go of her now. “Glad I could be of service. I’ll be waiting for you at seven.” We each smiled and Lindy began making her way back to the path. I watched her walk away and said my own prayer to God that she would show up at the restaurant. It surprised me how much I wanted her to show. My heart was still hurt about losing my fiancée, but strangely, Lindy’s gentleness felt like…a balm. I needed her to have dinner with me. Her absence had already gripped my heart and I didn’t want to wait hours to see her again. But I had no choice.

Release Blitz: Wishing on the Water by Elizabeth York

Title: Wishing on the Water
Series: Water Series Book #1
Author: Elizabeth York
Genre: Contemporary Romantic Suspense
Release Date: July 7, 2015

“I was always told never to wish on the first star at night. If everyone wishes on one star, how will the star keep up? A star with too many wishes will just fall out of the sky. Rain drops are plentiful, and there are thousands. They wash away the filth and carry it to a better place. So when you make a wish, wish on the water and let it carry your problems away.”

Candice-Leigh Carson, a New York City best-selling author, was engaged to one of NYPD's finest. She was living the dream until she lost her fiancé, quit her job and moved, leaving behind the only family she ever knew. She left her best friend Jaxson, without saying goodbye. In her quest to find herself, would she ever find love again?

Jaxson Monroe, one of NYPD's finest, lost his partner when an undercover job went south. After spending a night with his partner's lover, Candice, she flees into the night. He loved Candice and had promised his partner he would protect her. It was his fault she ran, but he quickly found himself in the arms of another. Would Jaxson ever convince Candice to come home or did he prefer another woman? Would their love survive his betrayal and her abandonment?

“I have something I need to do,” I stated, as I grabbed my purse. Jax went to reach for my elbow and I gave him an evil smile that said don’t try and stop me. I got out the door when Brooklyn came running up behind me. “Where are we going?” She asked with a smile on her face.
“I am going to handle something. Where are you going?” I asked, as the elevator opened.
“I am going where you are going.” Brooklyn replied.
“Brooklyn, I might be committing a crime and you are the acting Assistant District Attorney. So you see where that could be a problem?”
“No, a lawyer is a lawyer; besides, we work better when we have all the facts. What could be better than a bird’s eye view of the events?”
“Candice, wait!” Jax bellowed, but I nodded my head for Brooklyn to enter the elevator and walked in behind her.
“I have to do this Jax.” I spoke softly as the elevator doors shut on a hurt look on Jax’s face. The face that said he thought this would be the last time we saw each other. I thought about the characters in my books at that moment. I asked myself what would they do to achieve a happy ending and I drew a blank.
If this was a book I had been writing, I would have written myself into a corner with no clue where to go.
I walked out to the street and headed west. No clue where I was going because I was still working on the chain of events in my head. Brooklyn caught my arm and held me there as she hailed a cab.
“Figured out what you are going to do yet?” Brooklyn asked, as we piled into the cab. I had to buy some time.
“Take us to the Crossfit on Columbus Ave.” I shouted to the driver as my voice was finally finding itself. Brooklyn merely smiled at me. I don’t know how this was going to work. Anything illegal I do, my accomplice will also be my prosecutor.
“Brooklyn, we don’t know each other very well. If you are not prepared to go the distance with whatever I do, I think you should jump ship now.” “Don’t worry; I have our bail money.” Brooklyn reached across the cab and placed her hand on mine in a comforting way.
“Candice, I have been in your shoes before. I have wanted to save the people I loved by sacrificing myself. I know how you feel. I don’t know what you have planned, but whatever it is I am in. Let’s finish this, so our men won’t have targets on their backs.”

Take the time to get to know the characters and you will love them as much as she does.

Note to self: Never beg the man you’ve been avoiding for three months to help you. You should also never say you’ll do anything just to get out of a questionable date...

Three things I dislike about Luca Black:
1. He lies.
2. He’s cocky and self-absorbed.
3. He knows how to play me like his Aston Martin.

Dammit.

Now I’m stuck at his apartment. All because I needed his help. Now I have to face the fact that, no matter how much I try not to stare, he looks delicious in nothing but a towel around his waist.

What the hell was I thinking?

Seven days.
It’s just seven days with a man who can turn me on with a single look, and make me consider murder every time he opens his stupid British mouth.
I could do this...

Right?

Throwing caution to the wind, and no doubt my dignity, I hit call and prayed. I prayed he didn’t answer and that I’d have to some how climb out of the tiny, broken window above my cubicle and never step foot on this side of New York ever again.

The Gods were now laughing hysterically.

“Kitten.”

And there went my sanity… followed swiftly by my panties.

Dammit.

“Luca.” His name fell from my lips like a caress instead of what it should’ve been, a snarl. Coughing gently, I tried again. “Luca,” I said, a little more forcefully, but now I sounded like I couldn’t put a single sentence together.

Great.

It was going great.

“I… shit. I need your help.”

My hand went to my forehead as I watched my dignity jump out of the window along side my sanity and panties. Could I have sounded any more desperate? I should just end the call, I could say I accidentally butt dialed him while I was out with a super hot doctor on a super hot date. Then I’d somehow have to explain why I said his name, but I could work around that, right?

God dammit, Kylie, get your shit together. Just ask him to come and get you, it won’t kill you. The doctor might though.

I rolled my eyes and decided to suck it up but just as I was about to explain my predicament, he opened that stupid mouth of his.

“You, Kylie Jackson, need my help?” His deep laughter filled my ears and mortification took hold of me. This was a stupid idea.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” I spat.

“It means that the last time we saw each other was over three months ago, Kylie. I’m surprised you even remember my name. You’ve been avoiding me like the bloody plague and now you want my help?”

“I haven’t been avoiding you.” I mustered. It was a lie, but it was the best I had in the situation I was in. “Look, I know we haven’t spoken in a while but please, I’m begging you, help me out here?”

That sentence alone would be my undoing.

“You’re begging?” I could feel his excitement through the phone, coming off him in waves. What had I done? “Kitten, if you’re begging, I’ll do just about anything… but there’s a condition.”

I rolled my eyes, “When isn’t there a condition with you?”

“Do you want my help, or not?”

“Fine. Fine.” I sighed. “What’s the condition?”

“A little bird told me that your apartment is being redecorated this week and you need a place to stay until it’s finished.”

My eyes widened and I silently gasped, wondering how the hell he knew that. Whoever the little bird was, little bird was going to see the pointy side of my stiletto.

“I don’t want to know how you know that, but yes, I’m staying over at Quinn’s apartment for the week while they finish off.” Standing to my feet, I was about to press my head against the locked door of my cubicle when I thought twice. “Ew.” I whispered.

“I’m afraid not, love.” He chuckled into my ear — a deep resonating chuckle that did something stupid to my brain.

“What are you talking about? My bags are already at Quinn’s place.”

“Kitten, you’re not staying at Quinn’s. You’re staying with me. That’s the condition. Take it or leave it.”

If I wasn’t mortified before, I certainly was now. Had he lost his damn mind? There was a reason why we hadn’t seen or spoken to each other since my best friend's wedding, not to mention the anger I had towards him. The anger quickly resurfaced as I thought back, remembering how much of an asshole liar he was, and gave him my answer.

“No. Absolutely fucking not. Not on God's green earth and if you were the last person on it.” I blurted it out faster than I could think it. Shit.

“Looks like you’ve still got a problem and I have a very good glass of Scotch in my hand. Good luck, Kitten.” I could feel his smirk taunting me and it boiled my blood. I took a look at the open window above the toilet and grimaced, my anger simmering as I realised that if a week with Luca was the only way out of this stupid date, I’d have to suck it up.

“Fine!” I shrieked, “But there’s going to be ground rules. I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but when it comes to you, I know how to play your game. Now can we please move on to how the hell you’re going to get me out of this date with the serial… doctor?”

“You know rules are made to be broken, right?” His voice deepened, taking on a darker tone. It was the same voice that had me unraveling at the seams not so long ago, the same voice that could get me to do just about anything. Shit, I needed to get out of this. I couldn’t do this.

“On second thought, I think I can handle the Doctor.” I quickly fired back. My palm moved to my forehead as I tried to think of an escape plan, another route, something that would just get me the hell out of here and over to my best friends apartment, where I could change into my pajamas, and stuff my face with Ben and Jerry’s chocolate fudge brownie ice-cream and a bottle of red.

My train of irrational thought was suddenly cut short with a banging on the bathroom door.

What the hell?

“Are you okay? Do you need some… medical assistance?”

I shuddered as I recognised the voice of my date, clearly stood on the other side of my only rational exit out of here. I groaned. Why did I always get stuck with the creepers.

“Well, if you think you have this handled, I’m going to go back to my Sco-” “OKAY! Please, just get me the hell out of this place before I’m bludgeoned to death down an alley on the upper east side.”

Chapter One

 London, England

February 1799

The Marquis of Drake, Andrew Penton, leaned casually against the wall bordering the gardens. Anyone who stumbled upon him might think his pose nonchalant and tranquil. Yet inside, his discontent festered just below the surface.

There were numerous places he’d rather be, many obligations to which his time would be better devoted. Instead, he flitted around yet another ton gathering, acting the self-indulged lord with nothing better to do than discuss the weather with simpering young debutantes, and argue the merits of the war to be waged against their French counterparts.

He’d fled the overcrowded ballroom only moments before when his latest dance partner, pushed upon him by their hostess, had stepped on his booted foot one too many times. That was not the only injustice he’d been dealt during his brief time this evening. Another chit had held him so securely during their promenade about the dance floor that her hands had left sweaty stains on his linen shirt.

He wondered if young women today were properly trained in the art of the quadrille, or if they were sent into the wilds of society wholly unprepared.

And all the time, Andrew’s dear friend Benjamin chuckled at his unease.

It had been far simpler when he hadn’t tried to be a respectable lord; when he hadn’t given a feathering about what others thought of him or his antics about town. The days when he’d only cared about spending his coin and who would warm his bed that night seemed so long ago.

Now, he hid from potential bedmates and begrudgingly paid the new income tax levied against him to help offset the cost of financing British troops fighting in the Napoleonic War. Two shillings per pound was a trifling amount compared to what he’d spent to set up his last mistress in her own London townhouse.

It was past time he returned to the ballroom. The evening would end shortly, and he could return home or to his club for a drink.

Andrew pushed away from the wall, his position hidden from view of the main drive, and started back to the side entrance he’d exited a few moments before. It had been fortuitous that the lord who owned this home had a door leading from his study and onto the drive.

“…we have gone over this several times.”

The words floated on the light breeze, meeting Andrew as he stepped inside the study door and the warmth of the house. Pausing, he strained to hear the rest of the conversation, if only to delay his return to the ballroom.

Andrew pushed the doors closed, leaving it open only a crack as footsteps approached on the outside walk. It would not do to be caught eavesdropping.

A trio stopped outside the door, their features obscured by the darkness, though Andrew saw enough to know the group consisted of two females and a well-dressed gentleman.

“See that you follow the instructions given to you.” The man took the arm of one of the women and walked on, leaving their third companion behind.
